This article presents
statistical studies and results concerning the cost of bottled water opposing
tap water. Boesler, the author of this article exposes the results of
the studies made in the University of Michican; they survey that Americans are paying 300 times more money
for bottled water then tap water. Their goal was to discover the cost of one
gallon of bottled water opposed to tap. Researchers take into account that two
thirds of the population buy the single water bottles which contain 500 mL.
Since the research was conducted to find the cost one gallon, a customer would
ahve to buy multiple bottles of 500 mL for it to reach the amount, therefore
increasing the cost of one gallon. What should cost only $1.22 a gallon costs
now the incredible sum of $7.50. This amounted to 2,000x the cost of regular
tap water and twice as much as gasoline. He goes on in bulletpoints stating
facts in a neutral point a view with no personal opinions. This article
contains simple and factual statements which are just enough to make the reader
have his own point of view and opinions. He ends his work with a quote, saying
that although americans know the prices of bottled water are absurd and that
tap water is much more at hand, they continue buying it even during the economical
crisis and show no sign of stopping.
Matthey Boesler made a good choice
of words in this article making it simpe and believable. The quotes he exposed
were good support for his article and stating the University of Michigan gave
him credibility. The numbers and statistical information helped in
understanding the magnitude of this research and made the results more
tangible. The bulletpoints at the end was an easy way to lay out information
without tireing the reader although he could have made them shorter since this
was a factual article because the reader might lose interest in the midst of so
many unecessary words when what they really want is the information. Overall he
had a great usage of language and enough information to support his facts. This
article was very well thought of and clearly achieves it’s purpose which is to
inform the reader of the price of water and he does much more then that, it also grabs the readers attention with interesting facts and quotes.
