After hearing about two
situations concerning whether spanking is acceptable, Andrea Nair, a
psychotherapist and parenting educator, writes an article questioning if there
is any moment in which corporal punishment would be appropriate. A woman asked her
whether she should have spanked her kid in hope that he would have become a
better person. In addition, Nair tells that former NBA all-star, Michael
Richardson, says the spanking he got from his mother kept him from committing
mistakes. Contrary to the latter’s benefits from spanking, the author describes
harmful consequences that it can cause in a child and mentions the bad view
spanking has worldwide. Nair thinks that it is never appropriate to spank, but
she does admit that sometimes situations like the woman’s and Richardson ’s occur. Nair believes that
spanking could stop if only alternatives to disciplining are used.
Nair fills
her article with information, personal experience, and personal opinion. Being
a psychotherapist and parenting educator, she includes a lot of personal
experience she had with other people and her personal opinions concerning this
topic. Nair explains how a lot of her personal experience caused her to
question whether spanking is acceptable. Information regarding the negative side
of corporal punishment is used to support her opinion. Although, despite the
two situations she mentions have importance, some details Nair gives seem quite
unnecessary.
