11. My Jamaica: A country of Christianity, not crime

Roberta Millers tackles the change of the belief system within the different generations in Jamaica. After having spent a long time in the UK and coming back to Jamaica, Miller sees the changes that have happened within the few years. Christianity is the basis of everyone's belief in Jamaica but people have neglected to have an intimacy with God. Millers points out that the new growing pop culture in Jamaica has dismissed Christian model based life to the young generation. People in Jamaica do still refer to God in their daily dialogues by saying phrases like" Praise the Lord" or "God of Mercies." According to some of the senior citizens, Jamaica has more churches than any other islands in the world. Although Jamaica's national anthem may praise God and people may refer to God on their daily basis, pop culture has sucked in the minds of the young generation. The two main aspects of the culture that have neglected Christianity are reggae and Rastafarian ideas. The biggest leading force of these two ideas is Bob Marley, the legendary singer who hopes peace for the world.  These ideas degrade women and  promote free sex and violence, which oppose Christian ideas. Young people have been very much influenced by these types of ideas and are living their lives based on them. Millers concludes her essay by pointing out her hopes for her country. She says " ..it is my prayer that Jamaica will not follow suit in wiping out Christianity and instead treasure and cherish the faith as a beautiful part of our national heritage and identity."

Millers writes the article from a first person point of view. Her tone in the essay is very neutral .She points out the way pop culture has replaced Christianity in the past few years but doesn't forget to include the fact that Jamaica had its foundation on Christianity. She write the essay very clearly. Her vocabulary is not too complex to understand. She only uses words that are necessary in her essay and has omitted the ones that would confuse the readers. Overall, it was a pleasant article to read.
