11. No Grades, No SAT scores, Just Essays:Bard's Misguided New Admissions Plan

As I looked for an article to write about this article written by Jordan Weissmann, published by The Atlantic, caught my attention for several reasons. The title of the article is a incredible attention getter to High School students who are worried about college. The article begins by talking about the current admissions plan for colleges all over the United States. It then proceeds by talking about the problems with this admissions plan, and how it is filled with useless information that have nothing to do with their learning abilities. The article then explains Bard's new admissions plan, and how it would work. Weissman also states all the issues with these new admissions plan, issues such as the fact that this plan benefits the wealthier society of the United States, and that it is trust-based. The students must have to have written the essays themselves, but the admissions department of the colleges will have to completely trust them to have really been the authors of the essays.
The main purpose of this article was to inform people, especially High School students, about the new admissions plan that Bard wanted to use. Also, to inform students about the issues with this new plan. I believe Weissmann did a great job when writing this article, it gets the point across in a easy to read form. This article also brings out the best in the current admission plan. Weissmann uses some analogy when he refers to the newspaper The New York Times. He uses some asyndeton in the title, when instead of using conjunctions, he just uses commas. Also, he uses a strong, rich vocabulary, which engages the readers. This article is very formal and well written, it uses many rhetorical devices, such as the ones stated above, and captivates the attention of readers with statistics and facts about a subject that interests every high school student.
