14. Why Does Pop Romanticize Dying Young?

This article focuses on the obsession that the music industry has developed with young death. The author, Leah Sottile, emphasizes how artists from all music types are betting on songs that talk about living life for the moments and dying young. The purpose of this article is to question why is pop romanticizing a dreadful situation, such as dying young. The answer that Sottile comes us with, based on psychological studies is that this is a way to portray our cultural values. We now are extremely focused on ourselves, that the only thing that we think of, is how we need to live our own lives to the fullest, and now matter when we die we will be "too young". With a culture that has been introduced to so many harmful habits, such as drugs, alcohol, partying irresponsibily, the music industry has taken a ride in that reality to sell songs.

The article uses many rhetorical devices. The most present one is the analogy. Scottile begins the article by talking about many artists and comparing them. He talks about Justin Bieber with his swag, Miley Cyrus with her tongue, Skrillex’s "stupid" haircut. He compares them with the old artists, and how they have changed the face of the music industry. Scottile also talks about Ke$ha and One Direction. The article is a more informative article. It talks about the reasons why the media has influenced the teenagers so much into living in the moment. It also has many quotes based on researches made and professionals. This all contributes to making the article an useful and informing article that fulfills its purpose.
