In
this article Karen Swallow Prior talks about Jane Austen`s most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice. She says how this book and many other works by
her influenced in her way of thinking about marriage. Prior exposed her article
in various sections each had a subtitle explaining a lesson she learnt from a
book. One example is the subtitle First Impressions Can be Misleading. She
gives examples from the book about how Elizabeth Bennet, the main character
completely changed her opinion of Mr.Darcy, a rich single man, from the
beginning to the end of the novel. She has in total nine points which support
her thesis, proving that Jane Austen’s writing can be educative and teach
various lessons about marriage.
Prior
is very effective in this article and holds true to her thesis until the end.
Her purpose was to inform readers that from her own personal experience she
learned a lot about marriage. Second was to advise and persuade; by explaining each
topic on marriage she gives a brief counseling about what really happens in
marriage. She persuades the audience to read Jane Austen novels and to absorb
the message, criticism and all good advice Austen offers in her novels. Prior
was successful in her essay because it had a clear thesis which was explained,
proven to be true and persuasive.
