In the United States today, a majority of the Americans support gay marriage and not even 25 years ago were people horrified at the very thought. This is a result of subtle yet effective methods in convincing the public that gay people were normal people. They video taped gays and lesbians doing normal everyday activities like walking their dogs or cooking dinner. By doing this, gay rights activists were able to push the gaudy half-naked paraders out of the limelight. However, because they were so focused on the issue of marriage they ignored many other very important problems. One problem is that people can be fired in 24 states because of their sexual orientation and transgenders can be fired in 44 states. By only showing the public one aspect of gay life, they pushed all the other aspects to the sides and out of sight. Many people as a result, create a huge deal when a gay partner takes the last name of their partner. They only see it as a sign of ownership and not a sign of being one. Even though there are still many problems for the gay community, gay marriage shows that they can be solved in a short amount of time in a peaceful manner.
Noah Berlatsky writes an article about the LGBT community. His title is very clear and is able to convey exactly what he is going to be writing about. He also uses numbers to support his claim and sources like books written specifically about gay people. Although his point gets lost near the end of his article, he is able to tie it together successfully. He has a very wide range of vocabulary and a strong word choice. He uses literary devices like analogies to add more depth to his writing. He wrote a very interesting introduction and ends his article with a very good conclusion. He is able to tie in all his loose ends in his last paragraph and end it with a strong note.
