15. What is Ugly?

This article, posted on The Atlantic is based on a book Ugly: The Aesthetics of Everything that focuses on what the adjective "ugly" and the adjective "beautiful" really means. The article talks a lot about what the book is about and how the book's author explains these subjective adjectives. Bayley described Ugly as an answer to “design bores telling me such-and-such is ‘good design’ when what they really meant was ‘this is my taste.’” In other words, ugly is a question of opinion. Bayley tries to explain this idea by using his own taste as an example. He shows how what is good for him is silence and full of space, however, for other people it might be a loud, crowded place.
The article is filled with rhetorical devices, which makes it a lot more fun to read. It has many clichés, such as " beauty is in the eye of the beholder." It also has some analogies throughout the article. He mentions the famous philosopher Plato, and explains how he viewed ugly. Bayley says “Plato was fascinated by the gruesome sight of corpses beneath the executioner's dais. Ugly or beautiful?” He also mentions the book Ugly: The Aesthetics of Everything and quotes parts of it. The article as a whole is extremely interesting. The language is engaging and it is a subject that captivates every sort of audience.
