Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, a sergeant in the Army National Guard, responded to a comment by a female Army colonel "who said another female was too pretty to appear in Army publicity photos". Vail says that she is trying to break that stereotype but it will take more than one person to do so. Colonel Lynette Arnhart also suggests that advertisement should stop including only pretty women on publicity photos. She adds that ugly women are seen as competent as soldiers while attractive women are perceived for using their looks to get ahead.
This article is effective, as its main purpose is to inform. However, this selection also refers to women's image in the Army and how it affects them. No one really thinks about female soldiers' perspectives, this is why I thought this was so interesting. The tone is more informal; plainspoken and simple, making it easy to understand. The audience is targeted mostly to casual readers (Americans most likely). Although I believe the article is effective overall, I think the article could have explained a little more about how woman's beauty affects their jobs in the Army. I just feel like it could have been developed more in order for the readers to think further. The selection also includes a video, but it does not offer any new information that is not written in the article itself. Something that also caught my attention was the title. It says that Miss Kansas suggested using 'ugly' female soldiers for publicity photos. However, in not once did she call anyone ugly in her comments posted alongside the article. In fact, she seems to think she is one of those 'ugly' ones, which is ironic considering that she was in the top 10 for Miss USA. Negativity aside, the article was informative and to the point. It is really all I need for an informative partially entertaining selection.
