15. Free-diver Dies After Attempt to Break a Record

Adam Skolnick writes his essay on the death of the free-diving recordist, Nicholas Mevoli. He narrates how the 32 years old man from Brooklyn passed away after suffering damage in his lung after a dive of three minutes and a half. After describing the events that preceded his death, Skolnick begins to write about the sport of free-diving, and how Mevoli became involved with.

The article is informative and possesses a formal tone. However, there are a few uses of narration throughout his essay; with the goal of giving the reader an ideia of what ia happening and to also get his or her attention. An example of the use of narration can be found in the first paragraph, starting from the first sentence, where he begins his essay describing the place. After writing about Mevoli's death, Skolnick begins to talk about the sport - how it works, where it is practiced, etc. he follows to connect this to Mevoli's story and start describing how he became involved with the sport.
