8. My Son Wears Dresses; Get Over It

There are many parents who have to face the issue of having "gender creative" children. Matt Duron happens to be one of those parents. He grew up in a straight family and never had any confrontation with homosexuality until he met the older brother of his wife. After his first meeting with a gay person, he started to realize the jokes surrounding him about gay people, like his working area. At first it did not bother him at all, but after one of his sons realized that he was a girl at heart, it bothered him. He does not care and felt that teaching his son to "man up" would be degrading and wrong to do. He does not stand for calling someone "lesser than." He is a father and does not care about his son's sexuality. He loves him. Duron's wife started a blog about having an effeminate son and received a lot of replies. Many of them concerning how they do it and for support. He is a "guy guy" and loves sports but it does not mean that his son has to be as well.

Matt Duron wrote a short but very strong essay. It was written in first person and was very casual but every personal at the same time. His purpose was to tell people not to be homophobic and to accept those who are "gender creative" or homosexual. He writes that it is the parents' job to accept their children no matter what and to no force their ideals onto them. He uses very simple language to avoid any misunderstandings that could happen. This essay is very effective and the reason is because of its intimacy and how personal it is. His essay is so effective because he uses examples from his own life and his real reactions to the. He writes about his struggles and his thoughts which only add to the essay.

  1. Hi Rachel!
I really liked your analysis! Your summary was simple and well organized, but at the same time had all the important information! Your analysis had all the requirements of writing the author's purpose, the way he spoke to the readers, how his opinions and thoughts were expressed and such. :)
