9. Libertarian Republicans and Liberal Democrats: Marriage or 1-Night Stand?

In his article Alex Seitz-Wald, a reporter for National Journal, writes about the sudden alliance between democrats and republicans over the opposition to war on Syria, yet he includes comments on their inability to agree on any other matter. He begins by exemplifying recent events, reflecting on the state of the capital and recent demonstrations of supports between the two political parties. Seitz-Wald comments on this situation looking at it in a positive light when he says, "It's such a novel moment for Washington that some speculate we may finally be seeing the mythical populist coalition between anti-interventionist libertarians on the right and antiwar civil libertarians on the left that [representatives]...have dreamed about for years... It's a real left-right coalition." He continues by giving further testament of this new founded 'coalition' by citing different political figures from either side and by showing the progression of the two parties to one goal evidenced by current events. He highlights how these actions could be the 'tip of the iceberg' for the union between Republicans and Democrats. He continues his essay by giving the reader a possible outcome to this alliance, backing this up by providing recent cooperation between parties, especially when it came to the vote on the amendment to end National Security Agency surveillance. He also explains that the two sides often do come to the same conclusions but with different ends in mind. He continues his article by stating that at times the two parties do try to cooperate yet the media prevents them from doing so or purposefully tries to keep them apart. Finally, he ends the article by reporting the gap that must be overcome before the two parties can join hand-in-hand, they must find more ground upon which they agree on before they can join forces.

In his article Seitz-Wald focuses on informing the reader about the current change of attitude between the political powers in Washington, yet also attempts to persuade the reader that change is around the corner. He does not impose any biased opinion, but deliberates his message in a formal tone through heavily supported evidence. The image used in the article helps portray the topic of his article, its use was effective, giving  light to the political situation of the capital. His sentence structure is simple and conveys his straight to the point tone. His essay has a good flow to it, using adequate vocabulary for his tone and subject which reinforces his thesis. His article is consistent throughout, following the main idea he is trying to convey without wavering. His evidence is well supported both by historic events and from statements of high profile political figures. Although controversial, his article portrays what seems to be the truth about the relationship between the two political parties, which is sarcastically characterized by his title, "Libertarian Republicans and Liberal Democrats: Marriage or 1-Night Stand?" This clever use of the title further embellishes the point he is showing throughout the article. He tries to show the different aspects of the political parties relationships in light of the current events, such as Syria. His article is effective in conveying his message for it provides credible and sufficient evidence for the audience to follow along the essay without doubting it. He leaves space for the reader to create their own opinion, ending the article with the drastic changes which must occur in order for change to be possible. In this aspect, the reader must decide whether or not this change is possible.
