8. Rise Is Seen in Students Who Use E-Cigarettes

Sabrina Tavernise, the author of this article, starts it with a very shocking statistic. She says that the federal data shows that share of middle and high school students who use e-cigarettes doubled in 2012 from the previous year. She continues by saying that one out of ten students admit to have used e-cigarettes at least once in the past year. Tavernise uses these very shocking statistics as an "attention-getter", to draw attention to the article. All throughout the article she states statistics that create a more serious and interesting effect in the article.
Tavernise gives the article a more serious tone and writes in a more formal way. The objective of the article is to warn people about the effects of e-cigarettes, and warn parents about the growth in popularity of this harmful substance.  She does a good job going about her objectives by showing statistics, giving her points credibility. In Tavernise's article, she uses some hyperbole as well. She exaggerates when she calls the marketing of e-cigarettes aggressive and unacceptable. Overall this is a very useful article that informs and warns people about the growth of e-cigarettes and how should parents deal with it.
