22. On Self-Respect

This article talks about a very debatable subject: self-respect. Joan Didion begins this article by telling a quick example of the one time she lost all her self-respect: when she wasn't elected to be in the sorority she wanted. This made her lose her self-respect and it affected the way she saw herself. Didion also talks about loss of innocence that comes along with ignorance. Once one realizes who they really are it makes them lose their ignorance of self-image. Once a person lets go of the image that they have created in their mind, they can change their own perspective in their life, and how others see them begins to stop mattering. Self-respect is a very relatable subject, because many people struggle with it.
The author uses a couple of anecdotes and examples to express her view on self-respect all throughout the article. By using these, the author accomplishes her mission of advising people to respect themselves more. Also, Didion uses a language that captivates the reader, but at the same time flows easily and is easy to understand. Her rich vocabulary captivates the reader and because she writes in first person it includes the reader into the article. The author gets her point across very easily and thoroughly.
