Jeré Longman, a sports reporter for The New
York Times, wrote about
Japan being selected on Saturday to host the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Despite
the economic and social challenges of Japan, Tokyo easily defeated Istanbul and
Madrid to host the Summer Games. This event is seen as an opportunity for Japan
to pull themselves out from the long economic and political decline and also to
overcome the disasters caused by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident
two years ago. The Olympics will help Japan to restore their confidence and
walk out from the pressure placed by China, as explained by Harumi Arima, an
independent political analyst. The International Olympic Committee sees the
environmental concerns in Japan as a less urgent issue compared to the Syrian
war on Turkey`s border, the conflict against the antigovernment protesters in
Istanbul and the economic recession and high unemployment in Spain. One of the
main reasons for Japan to be elected is because it is seen by many members of
the Olympic committee as a calm harbor and an organized country for it has
hosted several sport events in the past years.
Longman wrote an
effective essay in informing the readers about Japan being elected as the
country to host the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He consulted a political
analyst in order to increase the credibility of his article and also mentioned
about the different opinions from the members of the Olympic Committee in
electing Japan to host the big event. He mentioned about the previous sport
events that Japan has hosted so that he can persuade the readers that Japan was
the ideal country for this big sport event in 2020. He also provided many
specific numbers such as the difference in the number of votes between Japan
and Istanbul and the amount of money that Japan has prepared to build the
stadium for the games in 2020. These specific details make the readers have a better
understanding of why Japan was elected. However, the details about the protests
in Brazil and Russia were distracting for the readers because it is not related
to the main topic of the article. In the last paragraph, it mentioned about a
quote of Richard W. Pound, a member from Montreal, which suggests the
possibility of the United States hosting the 2024 Games. This piece of
information is confusing for the readers because it is not related to the main
focus of the article, therefore it interrupts the flow of the essay. Overall,
the article was well written with simple vocabularies that transmit the main
purpose of the article to all types of audience.

Yaayy for Japan!!!
ReplyDeleteit is well done, but when you mentioned the word 'details' and 'opinions' on the second paragraph, instead of saying that, actually say what it is, or else it gets to vague.
