From the same Saudi chemist behind the shoe and underwear bombs, the new project: an undetectable liquid explosive. This post from The Atlantic communicates the readers of the latest Al Qaeda threat- a liquid explosive that, like their other explosives, forces the Counter-Terrorist Authorities to change their whole security system. This Saudi chemist, Asiri, is known for all the creative explosives he has created, explosives like shoe bombs, underwear bombs, printers fitted with high-grade explosives, and metal-free bombs. The Atlantic's author for this post, Josh Meyer, finishes the article saying that the authorities are looking for him and that this search has been going on for a while now. He even states that the CIA has thought that they had killed him at once but Asiri has able to escape once again.
This article is useful because the author uses rhetorical devices that make the engages the reader into the news, which is of extreme importance to them. One device used in this article is sarcasm. Josh Meyer uses this when he says, " You can thank him and his tradecraft for much of the frenzy of counterterrorism activity in recent days". It is sarcasm because you really won't thank a terrorist, but what the author means is that it is his fault that there has been counterterrorism activity. He also uses metaphor, when he says "The counterterrorism authorities have been playing a cat-and-mouse game with Asiri and other al Qaeda explosives experts for many years...", because when he says that the counterterrorism authorities are playing cat-and-mouse with the terrorist he doesn't mean that they are playing a game, but that they are searching them, like a cat looks for a mouse. Using all these devices to engage the reader into the news, he fulfills his purpose that is to share important news with the reader.
