This artciles topic is about how internet and big companies
can get hold of people’s personal informtion and use it to gain more money.
Thw authro cites various examples of how ads on the side of websites use
personal information to advertise products the person may need. The author's
supporting evidence revolves around Calo, a professor at Washington University
and his paper. Rebeca Rosen who writes for The Atlantic summarizes Calos work
and quotes him in various passages. Rosen highlights three main points that
Calo states in his paper that are the three harms the companies can cause bt obtaining persona information from people.
First is an economical issue, which can exploit what people can actually pay
for; second that people will feel violated that companies know their informtion
and thirdly that states that the comapnies can take awy peoples autonomy and
make them vulnerable and dependant on companies that can harm them.
These
three points clearly showed the message Rosen wanted to get across. Even though
it was not based on her own work she made it possible that people who would
never have read Calos paper an opportunity to read it in a summarized and
simpler version with easier acess. Her objective was to persuade or convince
readers that they should not trust those companies and make them know how they
can be harmful. She did reach that objective by having a clear and organized
thesis that made the reader know exactly what she was aiming for. Her three
points throughout the essay were also very clear and good evidence making the
essay more credible by geting it from Calos work. Overall she does a good job
and gets the message across.
