3. Teletherapy, Tumblr'd

Amanda Palleschi, the author of this article, introduces her essay with a two sentence summary and basic idea of what she wrote about. She introduces John Kim, the main focus of her article, with one of his patients. John Kim credits himself as the first therapist to work over the internet through a website like Tumblr. He began in 2010 and now has over 100 clients and has a whole working base under him. Palleschi gives a summary on Kim's life and what led to his growing internet-based clients. She also explains the use of technology in his therapeutic work and how the American Psychological Association reacted. She writes about how the APA would soon be deciding on whether or not it should be legal, considering how Kim works with people all over the continent and would be following some states' rules but not others. Introduced in this article, is the very new concept of telephyscology and how Kim uses that with his patients.

Palleschi uses certain technical terms which might make a reader think that her essay was directed towards an audience more knowledgeable in psychology. But she does use a general tone and word choice for any other audience. Her thesis is the very first sentence and she does a great job of supporting it and addressing it in her essay. She also uses a tone that seems to agree with John Kim and wants him to be able to continue his work. She supports his work and thesis with examples of satisfied customers and how he efficiently uses his resources to really connect to his clients. Palleschi also writes about Kim's back story, making him seem more real and relatable unlike some other therapists. She does, however, address specific clients whose problems might now work over the internet but she counters it with Kim saying how he would address those specific people. She gives positive numbers related to his website and also informs the readers with prices and how to find him. These numbers reflect her good opinion on Kim and his website and few parts almost seems as if she were advertising. She wraps up her essay with a quote from John Kim himself to emphasize his work and seems to show how effective his work is.
